Position:Farm manager (with a heart for people with special needs)

The project
Just 20 kilometers outside the town of Iringa, in the friendly village of Mangalali, Mark’s farm & lodge ltd wil start a unique project in Tanzania. It will become a project with a combination of small scale farming and tourism. Aim of the project is to integrate people with autism or a mental disability in society and to show that they have their own talents. On the farm, people with autism or a mental handicap will participate as much as possible in activities in the field of agriculture, animal husbandry and food transformation. It’s goal is to stimulate talents of people with a handicap by allowing them to do several works that fit their possibilities. The approach is that of so called inclusive development where people with and without handicap work hand in hand with each other. We call this a ‘CARE FARM’. Our goal is that the farm will function as a self sustaining unit.
On the farm, local people will be trained in how to work together with people with a mental handicap. Professional training and knowledge transfer to people from the local community will form an essential part of the functioning of the farm. Also, teaching parents, especially mothers, how they can stimulate the development of their child. There will be possibilities for Tanzanian families who have a person with a handicap to stay from some time on the farm in order to learn how they can better function with their child or family member who has a mental disability. In our activities, we search to work in harmony with the village of Mangalali.


The job
 

For the 6 Hectare MARK’s Farm at Mangalali, we search for a practical and hands on Farm manager. You will be responsible for the overall functioning of the farm and it’s projects. Since the project is still in the start-up phase, you have a pioneering spirit, you have excellent communication skills, you have practical farming experience especially in growing vegetables and staple crops. You like to work with people and you share the vision of MARK’s farm that everybody counts and has a talent. There will be simple accommodation for you available on the farm. We prefer to employ someone who is from the broader Iringa region.

Your responsibilities

  • ·         Working together with special education in the region to organize day care activities for children with a mental handicap
  • ·         Entertain good working relations with the village of Mangalali
  • ·         Report to the managing director of MARK’s farm &lodge
  • ·         Manage the farm budget
  • ·  Oversee the construction process on the farm

  • ·         Put up vegetable garden and all possible farming activities within the possibilities of the budget

  • ·         Organise marketing/sale of the farm products

Educational/Professional qualifications:

  • ·         A National Form V certificate or higher

  • ·         Computer literate in at least Word and Excel

  • ·         Fluent in both Swahili and English;

  • ·         Age Limit between: 25-35 years of age.

  • ·         Proven experience in overseeing farm activities
